Creating Calm

Stripping color from reality, combined with minimal compositions, Derek's work strikes emotion while telling stories of place and time.

Why Monochrome?

Removing color from an image allows the viewer to escape to a place that doesn't really exist. I create photographs that spark a memory, a desire, or a curiosity by pushing out the distractions of the real world. It allows our imagination to replace reality. I create images that give the viewers permission to superimpose their imagination on where, when and what they are looking at. Letting the story of the image become personal.
